Digital landmarks
2024, Digital photogrammetry, Blender, sound installation, iPhone
In the 1970s, a law on the inclusion of works of art in investment buildings came into force in the then-socialist Czechoslovakia, and highways were no exception. A large number of sculptures with almost no artistic value were created along the highways. Some were stolen over the years; others ended up in the foundations of petrol stations. Those that have survived have remained trapped in enclosed rest areas, gradually becoming overgrown and decaying. At the end of 2023, I embarked on a week-long car trip around the D1 highways in order to map these old, forgotten sculptures at now-defunct rest stops.
Today’s society is increasingly taking photos with mobile phones and the value of photography is slowly fading away. Using mobile photography and photogrammetry techniques, I reconstructed three-dimensional models of old sculptures. They are not only in photographs, but they become real sculptures again. Thanks to the chosen form, it is a kind of detachment from the photograph itself, where the value of the image disappears at the expense of the creation of the model. The photograph thus plays the role of a mere mediator of information. In my work I connect these old sculptures with the history of obsolete, broken phones, creating a parallel between material abandonment and digital oblivion.
My intention is to bring new life to these abandoned sculptures and, at the same time, to introduce something that is now completely overlooked and forgotten. Through a multimedia installation, I create a space for reflection on place, history, and our own identity. The work reflects the fast pace of modern times and redefines the traditional notion of the act of photography. The installation is accompanied by authentic sounds from the environment of each sculpture, together creating a vague soundtrack that at times transitions into an unpleasant noise in an attempt to show one of the negative aspects of highways.
V sedmdesátých letech 20. století vstoupil v tehdejším socialistickém Československu v platnost zákon o začleňování uměleckých děl do investičních staveb a dálnice nebyly výjimkou.
Práce zrcadlí rychlé tempo moderní doby a redefinuje tradiční pojetí aktu fotografování.
